Pink French Village Oil Painting by Étienne Ritter

The sky is pink. Not a sunset. A soft dusty rose that sits over the whole village and turns everything underneath it warm. The light coming down is cream and blush and pale blue, and it pools along the road and across the rooftops.

Then Ritter cuts through with the colors you actually remember. Yellow burning in the windows. A stroke of pure orange at the base of the buildings. A red-brown tree reaching across the middle of the canvas. A note of blue that has no business being there and makes the whole thing work.

The back of the stretcher is inscribed Koenigshoffen in pencil, in his hand. Koenigshoffen is the oldest quarter of Strasbourg, a village in its own right for centuries before the city grew out to meet it.

About the Artist
"My painting and I were born on 17 February 1934."

That is how Étienne Ritter (1934-1994) opened the notes he wrote about his own life. Not "I was born." My painting and I. He never spent a day in art school. At twenty-one, the army sent him to Algeria, and he kept painting there only because the men in his barracks quietly took over his chores to buy him the hours. Conscripts, far from home, nothing to gain. They looked at what he was making and decided it deserved protecting.

He came home in 1957 and never took another job. First Grand Prix at Sarreguemines in 1959. First Grand Prix at Deauville in 1960. Sarreguemines again in 1961, and again in 1963. He showed in Paris, Brussels, Montreal, Dallas, and Tokyo. One of his canvases is held by the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

And in thirty-seven years as a professional painter, he accepted exactly one commission, a watercolor his young son talked him into making as a gift for a schoolteacher. Every other painting he made, including this one, he made because he wanted to.

He wrote that he was trying to set down what he felt, hoping whoever looked at it later would feel it too. You are the whoever.

Why We Love It
Before finding this painting, we had never seen a landscape painted in pink. Its rose-toned sky, pale blue-gray road, warm ochres, and small passages of orange come together with an ease that feels entirely its own.

The paint is thick and tactile, with every stroke left visible. Up close, the surface is full of movement and variation. From across the room, the colors settle into a remarkably harmonious whole.

The story of the artist makes us admire it even more: a beautiful and distinctive work by someone whose ability was recognized and protected from the beginning.
