He stands in contrapposto, his weight settled onto one leg as he leans lightly on a staff. Turned almost entirely away, he is defined by the quiet architecture of his back, the angled shoulder, and the long, unbroken line of his leg. His averted gaze gives the study an unusual stillness, as though the viewer has caught him in an unguarded moment.
The drawing is built almost entirely through charcoal tone rather than outline. Shadow gathers beneath the ribs and along the spine; light moves across the shoulder blade and the muscles of the thigh. Each transition is soft and controlled, allowing the figure to emerge gradually from the paper.
It is an accomplished academic figure study. The artist understands anatomy, but more importantly knows when not to overstate it: every mark serves the balance, weight, and grace of the pose.
Why We Love It
This one is difficult to let go.
Its elegance comes from restraint. With the figure turned away and the face held just beyond view, the eye is drawn instead to the graceful line of the back, the slope of the shoulder, and the stillness of the pose. It does not need a face to hold your attention; the composition has already said everything.
The artist has studied the body with real care. Each contour and muscle is observed with precision, but the drawing never feels clinical or overly exposed. There is strength here, softened by poise. It is an intimate work, yet entirely composed: a quiet celebration of form, balance, and the beauty of the human figure.
A piece with rare sensitivity and distinction, and exactly the kind of drawing we would want to keep for ourselves.

A Note on August Shipping
Each August, much of France takes a well-earned pause to enjoy la vie. Some of our French friends and partners who help us source, prepare, and send our paintings have already headed off to do summer properly. A little patience may be required during this time. Consider it a small invitation to borrow a page from the French way of living: exhale. Orders placed during this period may occasionally take a little longer than usual. Pieces already in Los Angeles are unaffected and ready to ship as usual.
If you are purchasing for a time-sensitive project, please reach out before ordering and we’ll happily confirm the timeline for the specific piece.

If you have questions about shipping or customs, please don’t hesitate to message us at hellorawbrush@gmail.com, we’re here to help.
Most of our paintings will be shipped straight from France unless specified otherwise. While we aim to send them your way as quickly as possible, very occasional delays may occur, as some of our beloved French partners have a certain je ne sais quoi and like to take their time preparing the paintings. You can’t rush good things in life, after all—and we’re talking about antique and vintage paintings here.
