A river runs from the foreground back toward a distant village. Two cows stand in the shallows. On the far bank a figure sits beneath a single tall tree, dressed in red, the one warm note in a picture otherwise built from silver, green, and pale blue. That red is what makes the greens work. Cover it with your thumb and the whole thing goes quiet.
Everything here speaks Corot's language. The feathery tree mass. The lone slender tree leaning in from the edge. The silvery light. The far village with its tower, small enough to be a suggestion rather than a place. The water holding the sky.
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was the most influential landscape painter of nineteenth-century France. He led the Barbizon school and built the bridge between the Neoclassical tradition he inherited and the Impressionism that came after. A whole generation of painters spent their careers chasing what he found in light. This 19th century panel is one of theirs, working close to his manner and signed with their own monogram.
Why We Love It
The frame stops you first. Swept gilt in the Louis XV manner, scrolled cartouches at every corner and center, gold with real depth in it, bright across the raised ornament and darker down in the recesses. It gives this panel a presence you rarely find at this scale.
The painting is peaceful without being empty. Plenty is happening. Cows drinking, someone resting on the bank, a village going about its afternoon, clouds moving through. All of it has already settled. Nothing in this picture needs anything from you.

A Note on August Shipping
Each August, much of France takes a well-earned pause to enjoy la vie. Some of our French friends and partners who help us source, prepare, and send our paintings have already headed off to do summer properly. A little patience may be required during this time. Consider it a small invitation to borrow a page from the French way of living: exhale. Orders placed during this period may occasionally take a little longer than usual. Pieces already in Los Angeles are unaffected and ready to ship as usual.
If you are purchasing for a time-sensitive project, please reach out before ordering and we’ll happily confirm the timeline for the specific piece.

Most of our paintings will be shipped straight from France unless specified otherwise. While we aim to send them your way as quickly as possible, very occasional delays may occur, as some of our beloved French partners have a certain je ne sais quoi and like to take their time preparing the paintings. You can’t rush good things in life, after all—and we’re talking about antique and vintage paintings here.
