A quietly dramatic landscape attributed to French painter Eugène Brouillard (1870–1950), whose work was shaped by the light, trees, and shifting atmosphere of the Lyonnais countryside.
A stand of wind-shaped trees anchors the composition, their dark, sculptural forms set against an expansive blue-gray sky. Broad, rhythmic brushwork moves through the field, foliage, and clouds, giving the scene its wonderful sense of weather and movement. The painting feels both considered and instinctive: graphic in its silhouette, yet full of texture when viewed up close.
About the Artist
This work is attributed to Eugène Brouillard (1870–1950), the quietly singular Lyon painter whose life and work were rooted in the Croix-Rousse, Lyon’s historic silk-weaving quarter. A largely self-taught artist, Brouillard began working young and studied lace design in evening classes before becoming a dessinandier: Lyon’s specialist term for a designer of patterns for fabrics and textiles.
That early discipline remained visible in his painting. Brouillard’s landscapes are built through rhythmic, tactile marks and a close attention to the structure of trees, light, and atmosphere, bringing a decorative intelligence to subjects that can feel both modern and deeply rooted in place. He learned by looking closely at earlier masters including Corot, Puvis de Chavannes, and Poussin, then expanded his visual language through artists such as Signac, Ravier, Rivière, the Fauves, and the Nabis.
Brouillard was not an outsider to Lyon’s artistic life. He helped establish the Salon d’Automne de Lyon in 1906, and works by the artist are held by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. In 2002, the Maison Ravier devoted a retrospective to him under the title “Eugène Brouillard (1870–1950): An Undisputed Master of the Lyon School,” describing him as a landscape painter who renewed the genre through mood, twilight, backlit woodland scenes, and sculptural trees.
Why We Love It
We love the design of this painting: the sweeping silhouette of the wind-shaped trees, the cool blue-gray palette, and the way the dark foreground gives the entire landscape a sense of movement and structure. Its bold, rhythmic brushwork feels almost architectural from a distance, then wonderfully textural up close. The vintage gilt frame adds just enough formality, making it an especially beautiful piece for a modern room that needs depth, atmosphere, and a strong point of view.

We offer free shipping for all orders, with an expedited option available for those who consider waiting for art a form of exquisite torture. All items are insured and carefully packaged to ensure they arrive safely. Delivery typically takes 5–15 business days, depending on your location.
🇺🇸 U.S. customers: All of our pieces are exempt from import duties and tariffs. We provide the correct documentation to ensure your order clears customs smoothly.
🇬🇧 UK customers: Antique artworks are duty-free and qualify for a reduced 5% VAT at import, not the full rate.
🌍 Customers in other countries: Duties and taxes vary, but original and antique artworks often qualify for reduced or zero import fees. Please check with your local customs office for details. We’re happy to assist and provide any documentation you may need.

If it doesn’t feel right in your space, you may request a return within 7 days of delivery, as long as it’s returned in the same condition and original packaging.
