This is a nude done with taste. Real taste.
A small nude on panel that feels profoundly composed. The figure is painted with restraint, warm earth tones, and a softened edge that makes everything feel gentle rather than posed. The background is airy and spare, leaving space for the body to exist without drama. Up close, the texture is exquisite. You can see the hand, the patience, the surface decisions. Sourced in Paris, it’s the sort of painting you place on a shelf or console, leaning just slightly, and it instantly makes the entire corner feel elevated.
About the Artist
Claude Foënet (1935–2014) was a French painter and artiste-artisan (“artist-craftsman”) born in Nancy, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Reims and the Beaux-Arts de Nancy. Curators and gallerists often describe his practice as a search for contemplation and interiority, with a deliberate refusal of spectacle in favor of images that feel timeless and inward-looking. His work has been featured in dedicated exhibitions, including “Claude Foënet, le silence à l’œuvre” (“silence at work”) at Paris-based Galerie Stimmung, and it continues to circulate in France today, including Paris presentations with Galerie Stimmung and Galerie Mathieu Néouze (2024). Beyond the gallery world, his work has also appeared in French design and art-craft contexts such as Maison & Objet and the Salons des Métiers d’Art, and even on screen in Philippe Lioret’s film Welcome (2009).
Why We Love It
Because it is a nude with impeccable manners. Serene, peaceful, and genuinely artful. The palette is subtle, the mood is intimate, and the surface has that tactile quality collectors always look for.
Foënet was trained properly, and you can feel it in the discipline. He never chased spectacle. He built quiet, timeless images with restraint, interiority, and craft. This is exactly why his work keeps being shown in France. It has a calm authority that makes modern interiors feel more considered, and classic ones feel lighter.
Just look at the bistro table photo. It’s absurd how quickly it upgrades everything around it.
