Dated 1927 and titled “Moonrise” on the reverse, this signed nocturne has the intimacy and polish of a small collector’s piece. It is not a large statement painting, and that is part of its appeal. It feels personal, transportive, and easy to place, the kind of work that turns a bedroom corner, hallway, reading nook, or small wall into a considered art moment.
The composition is built around a glowing yellow moon, a wooded path, and a partially hidden house, but its real sophistication comes from what the artist chooses to leave softened. The forms are simplified, the palette is restrained, and the scene feels carefully edited rather than overly detailed. That treatment gives the painting a more modern sensibility, especially for a work from 1927.
This piece also has strong decorative versatility. The muted greens, greys, browns, and warm moonlight sit beautifully with wood, linen, stone, brass, cream walls, or darker paint colors. The simple warm wooden frame makes it especially easy to style, whether hung alone as an intimate focal point or layered into a collected gallery wall.
Why We Love It
This painting gave us an immediate sense of peace, but what makes it special is that it also feels like an invitation. Looking at it, we felt pulled into a wooded walk at night, following the path toward the glow of the moon. Not in a literal hiking sense, but in that more interior way a good painting can transport you somewhere. It feels like stepping briefly out of the noise of the day and into a place made of trees, shadow, and softened light.

A Note on August Shipping
Each August, much of France takes a well-earned pause to enjoy la vie. Some of our French friends and partners who help us source, prepare, and send our paintings have already headed off to do summer properly. A little patience may be required during this time. Consider it a small invitation to borrow a page from the French way of living: exhale. Orders placed during this period may occasionally take a little longer than usual. Pieces already in Los Angeles are unaffected and ready to ship as usual.
If you are purchasing for a time-sensitive project, please reach out before ordering and we’ll happily confirm the timeline for the specific piece.

Most of our paintings will be shipped straight from France unless specified otherwise. While we aim to send them your way as quickly as possible, very occasional delays may occur, as some of our beloved French partners have a certain je ne sais quoi and like to take their time preparing the paintings. You can’t rush good things in life, after all—and we’re talking about antique and vintage paintings here.
