Painted in oil on panel, the composition centers on the sitter’s steady gaze, framed by softly modeled features and a palette of warm earth tones punctuated by muted reds. The brushwork is deliberate yet expressive, allowing texture to remain visible while maintaining a strong sense of structure, a quality that reflects the artist’s early training in sculpture. The gilt frame is a dream with these colors: the softened reds, the honeyed browns, the glow of gold. Everything works together, effortlessly.
About the Artist
Isaac Dobrinsky (1891–1973) belongs to that intimate circle of School of Paris painters whose work rewards those who look closely. Born in Makariv (now Ukraine), he arrived in Paris in 1912 and settled at La Ruche, welcomed by the sculptor Marek Szwarc and sharing a studio with Chaïm Soutine for two years. After illness ended his path in sculpture, he devoted himself to painting, and his portraits gained a rare kind of focus: simplified forms, a warm earthy palette, and expressions that feel observed rather than invented, with a presence that grows more compelling the longer you live with it.
He exhibited in Parisian salons, including the Salon d’Automne (1928), and moved within the émigré circle often associated with Chagall and Kikoïne. While he never sought celebrity, his work has remained sought-after, frequently found in private collections and continuing to surface at auction. Today, Dobrinsky appears at auction regularly, and his portraits in particular have fetched over €2,000.
Why We Love It
This painting brings instant warmth and leaves a space feeling collected, cultivated, and refined. The young girl’s expression is poised, thoughtful, even slightly mature, so the piece never reads as childish. The color story is perfection: muted reds and blush tones against earthy warmth, all elevated by that luminous gold frame. The overall effect is warm and peaceful, bringing an immediate sense of ease to a space. The bold, visible brushwork gives the painting a contemporary edge, while its age and frame bring the right weight to more traditional interiors.
