A hillside village looks out toward the sea, its rooftops stepping down through olive and cypress toward pale blue water, with a slender bell tower rising over the town and faint islands along the far horizon. The palette stays soft and sun-warmed, sage and olive greens in front, terracotta roofs below, a wide haze of blue beyond, so the whole view feels like the moment you crest a hill in a French coastal town and stop walking because the water has just come into sight.
The oil is set in a broad, deeply carved gilt frame packed with scrolling foliate ornament. The formality of that frame against the ease of the little landscape it holds is the whole appeal, and it gives the piece real character.
Why We Love It
We love the moment it captures, the pause at the top of the climb, the glimpse of sea through the trees, the sense of an afternoon with nowhere else to be. It's a painting that opens up the second you look into it, carrying you from the foreground leaves all the way out to the islands on the horizon. It brings a little warmth and escape to a corner that needs it, a window onto the French coast wherever you put it.

Condition: The painting itself is in excellent condition. The frame shows two areas of loss to the raised gilt ornament, one at the bottom-left corner and one at the top center, where the decorative scrollwork has chipped and the gesso beneath shows through. Please see photos for details.
