About the Artist
Douglas Stannus Gray, 1890–1959, was a Royal Academy-trained British painter and a favorite pupil of John Singer Sargent, one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the early 20th century. That training gives this figure study real weight: confident observation, elegant handling of the human form, and the intimacy of the artist’s studio. He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools, later receiving the Landseer Scholarship and British Institution Scholarship, which allowed him to travel and work in France.

Gray exhibited in major London venues, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, later becoming a member of both the ROI and RP. His work is also represented in the Tate Gallery. His work was the subject of dedicated London gallery exhibitions after his death, reinforcing his standing beyond his lifetime.
