Sourced in Paris, this is a moody mid-century view of the Port of Amsterdam, painted by French painter and engraver Édouard Righetti (1924–2001). Restless sky, anchored boats, layered blues that feel both nostalgic and current.

About the Artist

Édouard Righetti (1924–2001) was a French painter and engraver associated with the post-war “Jeune Peinture” (young painting) circle in Paris, admired for expressive color and atmospheric city and harbor scenes. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and the School of Decorative Arts in Nice, then studied engraving in Paris with Édouard Goerg.  French sources also note Goerg’s place in a modern French lineage (often discussed in relation to Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier), which helps explain why Righetti’s work feels painterly, structured, and sophisticated rather than merely decorative. He exhibited in important French venues including the Salon Le Trait and the Biennale de Paris, and he showed in galleries across France and beyond. Notably, the Department of Prints and Photography of the Bibliothèque nationale de France holds more than 200 of his works.

Why We Love It

The sky is all motion: broad, assertive strokes that make the whole composition breathe. The scene is anchored by boats reduced to essential shapes, which is exactly why it feels so modern in an interior. The result is atmospheric without being sentimental, and contemporary without losing its mid-century soul.
