Sourced in Toulouse in the south of France, this 20th-century seascape by René de Baugnies (1869–1962) captures a luminous stretch of water scattered with sailboats, punctuated by a single vessel with a warm terracotta-red sail. The palette is what makes it irresistible: a silvery-blue sea, a sky softened by clouds, and that restrained note of earthy red. Everything is beautifully set off by an ornate gilt frame that gives the piece instant presence. The brushwork is confident and painterly, built from visible strokes that catch light on the water rather than chasing photographic detail. Made for a space that wants sophistication without looking overdone.
About the Artist
De Baugnies was a Belgian artist who participated in numerous exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. In 1925 he showed at the Salon Lamorinière, and in 1929 he sent a marine painting titled Bassin des pêcheurs, Ostende to the Salon des artistes français in Paris. He is best known for landscapes and marines with subtle atmospheric light effects, often described as neo-impressionist / post-impressionist in sensibility. Works by De Baugnies are held in museums including Tournai, Ixelles, and Marche-en-Famenne.
Why We Love It
The colors first: silvery water, an airy sky, and that warm sail pulling everything into balance, all made richer by the glow of the gilt frame. The overall feeling is peaceful, almost instantly calming, like opening a window and finally exhaling. Then the brushstrokes: bold, visible marks that give the sea movement and energy, so the scene feels alive, not decorative. This is the sort of painting people notice, then ask about.
